Basic Formatting Guidelines
- Place your name on your paper.
- Give your paper a title.
- Write in 12 point Times New Roman font.
- Use 1 or 1.25 inch margins.
- Place the word count at the end of the paper.
- Number the pages.
- Do not insert extra lines in between paragraphs.
- Double space.
In-Text Style Guidelines
- Write in the third person. This means you should never use the following pronouns: I, you, or we.
- Write out all numbers under one hundred (fifty-two, thirty-six, eighteenth century, etc.). Dates appear as numbers (August 3, 1517, December 7, 1941, etc.).
- Only use elipses (...) when shortening quotations. They should never begin or end quotations.
Citation Guidelines
- Cite in-text using the (Author ##) format. The citation should always appear between the last word of the sentence and the period, but after quotation marks. For example: As Strayer argues, "The world is very old" (Strayer 2).
- Notice in the example above that there is no comma between author and page number and that the quotation is introduced.
Bibliography Guidelines
- Follow the sample bibliography formatting provided here.
- Tab in the second line of every multi-line bibliographic entry.
- Organize your bibliography alphabetically by author.
