Dharma

Page history last edited by Naryan Rustgi 13 years ago

Dharma is one of the more important Hindu and Buddhist beleifs of getting to an enlightened state or being. It slightly varies with both of the religions, but the end result is that if good dharma is practiced, then a Hindu will find his inner Atman and become one with Brahman; and a Buddhist will reach Nirvana.

For Hinduism, dharma is a relatively complex concept to understand. Each caste in a Hindu society has their own "moral rules" that they should follow and practice. This is practicing good dharma, but if a member of that caste does not follow these rules, they will have bad dharma; the difference will be explained later. Practicing good dharma as a Hindu can lead to good Karma, which leads to a higher caste in Samsara (cycle of rebirth and death); thus leading to Moksha (release from Samsara) and finally to Atman and/or Brahman ("being one with the universe"). (Good Dharma-->Good Karma-->Higher Caste Samsara-->Moksha-->Brahman). Bad Dharma will just lead to bad Karma then to bad Samsara, and this cycle repeats until good Dharma is preformed. (Bad Dharma-->Bad Karma-->Lower Caste Samsara)

For Buddhism, dharma is much easier to understand, because if you practice good Dharma, you will reach Nirvana. Dharma for Buddhism is jut following the 4 Noble Truths, you will reach Nirvana. The First of the 4 Noble Truths is understanding that "Life Means Suffering"; the second is "Suffering is Caused by the Gratification of desires"; Third is "Restraining From These Desires Cures Suffering"; Finally is "Move on to the 8-Fold Path". The 8-Fold Path is 1.) Know the 4 Noble Truths, 2.) Right Intentions, 3.) Right Speech, 4.) Right Actions, 5.) Right Livelyhood, 6.) Right Effort, 7.) Right Concentration, 8.) Right Meditiation. If one were to follow the 4 Noble truths and the 8-Fold Path (Buddhist Dharma), then that Buddhist will reach Nirvana.
